Gong Yuen (Jet Li) is the son of a slave laborer, and he reaches the Shaolin Temple as a fugitive after a general betrays the Tang emperor and takes the throne in the East Capital. Cheung Sing-Yim lets the story wander between training, comedy and a romance, with Master Tan Chuang (Yu Hai) teaching the boy kung fu. Under it all sits a plain question of whether a martial art built for discipline can be put to use for revenge.
