Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes (William Gillette) takes up the case of Alice Faulkner (Marjorie Kay), a young woman held against her will by scammers who want to know where certain letters are hidden. The letters could cause a scandal reaching the royal family, and Holmes means to find them first. Arthur Berthelet directs this 1916 Essanay silent adapted from Gillette's own stage play, a film long considered lost until a copy turned up in a Paris vault in 2014.
