Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) has one job in the middle of the war: get Dr. Franz Tobel, the Swiss inventor of a new bomb-sight, out of the Gestapo's reach and into England. Roy William Neill sends him and Doctor Watson (Nigel Bruce) after Professor Moriarty (Lionel Atwill), who wants the invention for himself and has a buyer in Germany. The only lead is a code of little dancing men, and Holmes sits over it with his pipe lit.
