David Helfgott (Noah Taylor) is a boy who wants only to play the piano, and his father Peter (Armin Mueller-Stahl) wants it for him even harder. Scott Hicks follows David from the teachers who push him toward the hardest concertos to the years after his breakdown, when he is kept in institutions. Geoffrey Rush plays him as an adult, humming and talking in a rush, his hands resting on the keys.
