Shirley: Visions of Reality

A fictional actress named Shirley (Stephanie Cumming) moves from room to room, each one built to match a painting by Edward Hopper. Gustav Deutsch dates every scene to August 28 or 29 of a different year, running from the 1930s to the 1960s, in places from Paris to New York to Cape Cod. Thirteen paintings come to life around her, and Shirley sits at the center of each, working through a career and a private life in the same plain light.
