Lt. Domenico Malacarne (Luc Merenda) is a young policeman who wants to do the job straight, with his father's name as proof that an honest cop can exist. The mob has other ideas, and men like Pascal (Raymond Pellegrin) are ready to put him on the payroll. Fernando Di Leo sets Malacarne against Dr. Nazzari (Richard Conte), and the quiet courtesy between them carries more menace than the guns.
