In the rugged mountains of the Pacific Northwest, a murderer has vanished into the trees, and FBI agent Warren Stantin (Sidney Poitier) has only ever worked city streets. Roger Spottiswoode sends him up the trails with Jonathan Knox (Tom Berenger), a local tracker who knows the terrain and has little patience for an outsider. Then the killer takes Sarah (Kirstie Alley), Knox's girlfriend, and the two men have to trust each other.
