“Something wonderful has happened... No. 5 is alive.”

In 1986, a military lab is testing a line of experimental robots when a lightning bolt strikes one of them, Number 5, and he starts to think he is alive. He walks out of the facility and is taken in by Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy), an animal lover who assumes he is an alien. John Badham sends his designer Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg) after him, and she begins teaching the curious machine how the world works.
