A waitress hits a boy with her car, drives away, and the boy lapses into a coma soon after. His parents, Ann (Andie MacDowell) and Howard (Bruce Davison), wait at the hospital while a baker phones their house about a birthday cake nobody picked up. Robert Altman moves between 22 people across Los Angeles, and he takes their small cruelties and tenderness as the way a city's lives touch without anyone noticing.
