Magnolia Hawkes (Irene Dunne) has spent her girlhood on her father's Mississippi riverboat, and she wants to step out of the audience and onto its stage. Her chance comes when Julie LaVerne (Helen Morgan) and her husband are run out of town by a sheriff, and Gaylord Ravenal (Allan Jones), a charming gambler, arrives just as she takes the lead. Magnolia has to learn what her choice will cost her.
