Gaylord Ravenal (Howard Keel), a gambler working the Mississippi, steps aboard the Cotton Blossom, a show boat owned by Cap'n Andy Hawks (Joe E. Brown), and soon has the eye of his daughter Magnolia (Kathryn Grayson). George Sidney fills the boat with songs and a company of players, with Julie LaVerne (Ava Gardner) among them. A river gambler's luck is never steady, and Magnolia is betting her whole future on a man who lives by the next hand.
