Peggy Pepper (Marion Davies) steps off the train from Georgia with her father, Colonel Pepper (Dell Henderson), sure that a major studio is waiting to make her a great dramatic star. Instead she is handed to a studio where Billy Boone (William Haines) works in slapstick, and King Vidor fills the lot with cameos from Chaplin, Fairbanks and Vidor himself. Under the grease paint and the plans lies a plain question of what a person gives up to be seen.
