Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) is prescribed a new psychiatric drug after her husband is released from prison, but the medication triggers violent side effects she cannot control. Her psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) and a colleague become entangled in the consequences as the investigation spirals. By the end, Emily has orchestrated a murder, and the cost of her scheme settles on the people who tried to help her.
