Sebastião Rodrigues (David Lampson) is a Portuguese Jesuit priest who sails to Japan in the 17th century, carrying his faith to a country that has outlawed it. He has come to find his mentor, who is rumoured to have renounced the Church. Masahiro Shinoda follows him through the villages, where Kichijiro (Mako), a man who has already betrayed his faith, becomes the priest's guide, his burden, and the one face he cannot shake.
