Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) is an ecologist who tends the last surviving forests of Earth, kept alive in greenhouse domes aboard a space freighter. He spends his days in the soil and his evenings with the three small drones he has taught to garden. When the order comes to destroy the domes, he refuses. Douglas Trumbull, in his first film as director, built the ship's interiors and the drones with the same practical effects work he had done for 2001.
