“Come Back, or I Shall Die...”

Hervé Joncour (Michael Pitt) trades in silkworm eggs and lives quietly with his wife, Hélène (Keira Knightley), until disease sweeps through the silkworms of Europe. His only chance to save the trade is a long journey to Japan for healthy eggs. François Girard sends him back there again and again, and in a village across the sea he becomes fixed on a young concubine (Sei Ashina). At home, Hélène waits and begins to see what his absences hold.
