George Caldwell (Gene Wilder), a book editor, boards the Silver Streak in Los Angeles for a quiet ride to Chicago and a little peace. Then he sees a murdered man thrown from the train, and no one on board believes him. Arthur Hiller follows George as he starts asking questions himself, which only puts the killer on his trail and leaves him running with nothing but his nerve.
