“Love is a game. Easy to start. Hard to finish.”

Janet Livermore (Bridget Fonda) and Steve Dunne (Campbell Scott) live down the hall from each other in a Seattle apartment building, along with Linda Powell (Kyra Sedgwick) and other twentysomethings still working out how to date. Cameron Crowe follows them through the early 1990s, with Cliff Poncier (Matt Dillon) fronting a grunge band. Under the jokes, the question is how people in their twenties learn to want one person and keep wanting them.
