Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke), a true-crime writer, moves his family into a house where an unsolved murder took place, hoping the proximity will revive his stalled career. In the attic he finds a box of old film reels depicting families killed in ways that defy explanation, each one marked with a strange symbol. As he watches and takes notes, a presence from those films begins to follow him home.
