“Once in a Lifetime... The Opulence and Magnitude... The Gilt and Glory of a Mighty Empire!”

Elisabeth of Bavaria, known as Sissi (Romy Schneider), wants a life of her own, even as she is drawn toward the young Emperor Franz Josef (Karlheinz Böhm). Ernst Marischka condenses his three-part Sissi series into one film, built from archive footage of Schneider and Böhm as the courtship unfolds. Duchess Ludovika (Magda Schneider) and Archduchess Sophie (Vilma Degischer) watch from the edges of the frame.
