“No sex. No booze. No men. No way.”

In a quiet California convent, Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg), a lounge singer on the run after watching her mobster boyfriend commit a murder, is hidden away as Sister Mary Clarence. The Mother Superior (Maggie Smith) runs a strict house, and Deloris, with her sequins and her big voice, fits in about as well as you'd expect. Emile Ardolino directs it with a loose, easy hand and plenty of room for the singing.
