Sisters of the Gion

Umekichi (Yōko Umemura), a geisha in Kyoto's Gion district, takes in Furusawa (Benkei Shiganoya), her old patron, after he goes bankrupt and leaves his wife. Her younger sister O-mocha (Isuzu Yamada) wants no part of it and argues that geisha should find wealthy men to keep them. Kenji Mizoguchi sets the two women against each other in one small house, where each yen of rent and each kimono is a security one of them stands to lose.
