Sita Sings the Blues

“The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told.”

Sita (Reena Shah) loves her husband Rama (Debargo Sanyal) and follows him into exile, singing her heartbreak in the voice of 1920s jazz singer Annette Hanshaw. Nina Paley sets that old Ramayana story beside her own breakup, and three Indian shadow puppets chat their way through the history, getting the details half right and arguing about the rest. Two women, thousands of years apart, are left waiting on men who have already moved on.
