“For Paul, every person is a new door to a new world.”

Ouisa (Stockard Channing) and her husband Flan (Donald Sutherland) are Manhattan art dealers, hosting a dinner when a bleeding young stranger named Paul (Will Smith) turns up at their door. He says he is a friend of their children and the son of Sidney Poitier, and the couple take him in. Schepisi adapts John Guare's play and keeps its stagey, talky rhythm, with characters often turning to speak straight to the camera.
