It's 1995, and Ernest P. Worrell (Jim Varney) is a lovable goof who joins the basketball team at his place of work. An angel who looks a great deal like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar hands him a pair of magic sneakers, and Ernest turns into a star. John Cherry, who wrote and directed, builds the whole film on one plain idea: a man with no talent for the game gets a lift from an angel's gift of magic sneakers.
