“Think of the perfect crime... Then go one step further.”

Andrew Wyke (Laurence Olivier) is a successful mystery novelist who lives among toys, puzzles and mechanical figures, and he treats every conversation as a game he means to win. He invites Milo Tindle (Michael Caine), the man who is seeing his wife, to come and talk. Joseph L. Mankiewicz sets the two of them against each other in one house, where the contest is over pride and who gets to be the cleverer man, and the stakes may be deadly.
