Karl Childers (Billy Bob Thornton) has lived in the Arkansas state hospital since he was twelve, put there for killing his mother and her lover. He is let out into a small town, slow of speech and still carrying the habits of the ward. Billy Bob Thornton, who also directed, sets him beside a boy named Frank (Lucas Black) and Frank's mother, and Doyle (Dwight Yoakam), the man in their house, is a danger to every one of them.
