“First loves last forever.”

Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke) is a local newspaper reporter in the 1950s, still carrying a long-ago romance with Hatsue Miyamoto (Youki Kudoh). When a Japanese-American fisherman, her husband Kazuo (Rick Yune), is tried for killing a neighbour at sea, Ishmael covers the case and finds her tied to it. Scott Hicks, working from David Guterson's novel, paints the island in soft, snowy light.
