Bobby Fine (Ryan O'Neal) is trying to dig his father out of a money problem when he cuts a hole in a pair of jeans and lands on a new fashion idea, the bottomless pants. Soon Bobby is mixed up with Jack (Jack Warden) and Lira (Mariangela Melato), and the design catches on overnight. Andrew Bergman, directing for the first time, plays all of it deadpan, with Ennio Morricone's score underneath.
