Lieutenant Janet Davidson (Claudette Colbert) leads a unit of Army nurses into the Philippines as the Pacific war begins, and soon finds them cut off behind enemy lines. Mark Sandrich follows her as she tries to keep her staff, including Joan O'Doul (Paulette Goddard) and Olivia D'Arcy (Veronica Lake), steady and as close to ordinary life as the fighting allows. They still go on dates, and they still tend the wounded, who keep coming.
