“Love first. Fight later”

Erik Lanshof (Rutger Hauer) is a university student in Leiden in 1940, one of a close circle of friends that includes Guus LeJeune (Jeroen Krabbé). When the German army invades the Netherlands, each of them has to pick a side, and they do not pick the same one. Paul Verhoeven follows six friends as the war sends them toward resistance, resignation and collaboration, and the friendship itself becomes the thing under strain.
