In 1948, Dave Hirsh (Frank Sinatra), a novelist and army veteran, steps off a bus in the Midwest town he left sixteen years earlier. His brother Frank (Arthur Kennedy) has built a respectable life there and does not want Dave around to spoil it. Vincente Minnelli puts Dave between a gambler, Bama Dillert (Dean Martin), and two women, Ginnie (Shirley MacLaine) and Gwen (Martha Hyer), and each of them wants a different Dave to stay.
