“Before they could stand together, they had to stand alone.”

Keith Nelson (Eric Stoltz), an artsy outcast at his high school, wants one date with Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson), the most popular girl in it. His tomboy best friend Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) coaches him along, though she has started to want more from Keith than friendship. Howard Deutch gives Amanda's snobby ex, Hardy Jenns (Craig Sheffer), a grudge, and Watts sits behind her drum kit, watching Keith.
