Some Mother's Son

(1996)Directed by Terry George112 min · RDrama, History
“Between love and loyalty... Between life and death... Lies a choice no mother should have to make.”

In 1981, prisoners in the Maze Prison in Northern Ireland refuse their food, led by Bobby Sands (John Lynch), demanding to be treated as prisoners of war and not as criminals. Two of the mothers who must decide what to do are Kathleen Quigley (Helen Mirren) and Annie Higgins (Fionnula Flanagan), whose sons are among the strikers. Terry George, who wrote it with Jim Sheridan, keeps the camera close to the kitchens and visiting rooms where the mothers wait.
