A Carpathian nobleman calling himself Count Alucard (Lon Chaney Jr.) crosses the ocean at the invitation of Katherine Caldwell (Louise Allbritton), a young heiress with a deep interest in the occult. Her boyfriend Frank Stanley (Robert Paige) and the local doctor grow wary of the stranger, who talks about the "virile" soil of the new world. Robert Siodmak sets the old European menace down in a modern American town and lets the unease build quietly.
