In 1937 China, a theater company arrives to stage a play in an opera house that has just been rebuilt. Soon the new building is troubled by a mysterious figure, Song Danping (Jin Shan), whose attention fixes on the company's young star, Sun Xiao-Ou (Chao Shi). Ma-Xu Weibang, best known for horror, draws on Leroux's novel and the 1925 Hollywood film to make what is often called the first Chinese horror musical.
