Seven-year-old Johnny (Bobby Driscoll) wants his parents back together, but he arrives at his grandmother's Georgia plantation with his mother (Ruth Warrick) and the separation hanging over him. Uncle Remus (James Baskett) answers his confusion with stories of Br'er Rabbit, and Harve Foster and Wilfred Jackson move the film between live action and animation. The boy listens closely, trying to work out where he fits in this new place.
