“Between the innocent, the romantic, the sensual, and the unthinkable. There are still some things we have yet to imagine.”

Stingo (Peter MacNicol) is a young writer who rents a room in a Brooklyn boarding house in 1947, hoping to start his first novel. Downstairs live Sophie (Meryl Streep), a Polish survivor of Auschwitz, and her volatile lover Nathan (Kevin Kline), and Stingo is soon pulled into their lives. Alan J. Pakula moves between the Brooklyn summer and Sophie's memories of the war, letting her story come out in pieces.
