“He didn't give up, he got down.”

In 1986, Mark Watson (C. Thomas Howell) has been accepted to Harvard Law, but his affluent family won't pay for it. Desperate for tuition, he swallows tanning pills until his skin is dark enough to qualify for a scholarship set aside for African-American students. Steve Miner follows Mark through Cambridge, where Professor Banks (James Earl Jones) and classmate Sarah Walker (Rae Dawn Chong) meet a young man who has no idea what he has signed up for.
