Sound of the Mountain

Kikuko (Setsuko Hara) wants to be a good wife, and she goes about it quietly, in the household of her husband's family. Her father-in-law Shingo (So Yamamura) comes to rely on her warmth, while her husband Shuuichi (Ken Uehara) slights her openly and spends his evenings with another woman. Mikio Naruse adapts Yasunari Kawabata's novel, and what hangs over Kikuko is the marriage she keeps trying to hold together alone.
