Nobody in the squad can say who is shooting at them, only that the rounds in their rifles are blanks and the swamp keeps swallowing the way out. It is 1973, and nine Louisiana National Guardsmen, among them Spencer (Keith Carradine) and Hardin (Powers Boothe), have taken some Cajun canoes on a weekend exercise. Walter Hill shoots the bayou as a place with no clear edges, and the men come apart inside it.
