Billy "The Great" Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a champion boxer whose wife is killed in street violence, leaving him with their young daughter Leila (Oona Laurence). Grief and rage send him into free fall, and he loses custody of Leila to the system. Desperate to reclaim his life, Billy enters the gym under trainer Tick Wills (Forest Whitaker), fighting not for titles but for the chance to be her father again.
