“From downtown to uptown”

Sparkle (Irene Cara) is the quiet one of three sisters in Harlem, singing in her church choir in the late 1950s and writing songs of her own. With Sister (Lonette McKee) and Delores (Dwan Smith), she turns the choir loft into a girl group, and Stix (Philip Michael Thomas) comes along to help get them heard. Sam O'Steen follows the sisters from the church into the 1960s, where the music pulls at the family as much as it holds it together.
