The summer after high school, on a Southern California beach, eighteen-year-old Penny Cooper (Carson Meyer) is still stuck on Johnny Sanders Jr. (Noah Centineo), the surfer she has pined over for years. His father's death pulled them closer, but Ash Baker (Jackson White), a country musician no one knows, makes her unsure. Alex Israel, directing for the first time, leaves Penny on the beach beside her friend Camilla (Bianca A. Santos), the sun bright on the water.
