Major Lex Kearney (Gary Cooper) has been dishonourably discharged for cowardice in battle, and he wants his name back badly enough to volunteer for an undercover job. The Union needs its horse shipments to get through, and raiders keep hitting them. André de Toth sends Kearney in among the jayhawkers and Confederate soldiers behind the raids, where one slip could cost him his life.
