On the pavement outside the West End theatres, Charles Staggers (Charles Laughton) works the queues as an aging busker, and a young pickpocket named Libby (Vivien Leigh) works the same crowds. He takes her into his troupe, and her dancing soon catches the eye of the songwriter Harley Prentiss (Rex Harrison). Tim Whelan's film sets a stage career against a street one, and what the street gives a person is not the same as what the theatre takes.
