“Great stars! Great story! Great picture!”

In 1937 New York, a boardinghouse at 158 West 58th Street is crowded with young actresses and showgirls, all waiting on a part and trading wisecracks to get through it. Terry Randall (Katharine Hepburn), an heiress who wants to make it on the stage without her family's money, moves in beside the sharp-tongued Jean Maitland (Ginger Rogers). Gregory La Cava fills the house with overlapping talk and a cast of women whose disappointments tie them together.
