“The star-spangled, laugh-loaded salute to our P.W. heroes!”

J.J. Sefton (William Holden) trades cigarettes, runs a rat race and brews his own liquor, and all he wants is to get through the war in comfort. When two American prisoners are shot dead escaping from their German camp, the men of his barracks decide there is an informer among them, and they settle on Sefton. Billy Wilder keeps the story inside that one hut, where men with nowhere to go can only turn on each other.
