“Till the last man...”

In 1942, a German platoon is pulled from a posting in Italy and sent to the Eastern Front, where the Battle of Stalingrad is under way. Lieutenant Hans von Witzland (Thomas Kretschmann) and Corporal Fritz Reiser (Dominique Horwitz) fight alongside Rollo and GeGe until half the unit is dead and a sadistic captain takes command. Joseph Vilsmaier leaves the survivors among the ruins of a city the Soviet Army has now closed around them.
