Stan Laurel (Steve Coogan) and Oliver Hardy (John C. Reilly) were once the biggest comedy act in Hollywood, and in 1953 they take a variety hall tour of Britain and Ireland to try to raise money for another film. The schedule is gruelling, the theatres are small, and their wives Ida and Lucille travel along, a double act of their own. Jon S. Baird keeps the camera close on the two men as they work, so the friendship shows in the small things they do for each other.
